Our ultimate goal is to create an art event(s) for young people in Stockton whereby they can use art to express the impact of gun violence on them, their families, and their neighbors.

Imagining Better

The Cleveland School Remembers group is focused on creating a safer environment for our citizens and taking action against gun violence. We believe that our weak gun laws, media glorification of violence, and the loss of personal responsibility and respect for others have escalated violence in this country.

We support programs and legislation that:

• Increase public safety
• Support sensible gun laws
• Provide anti-violence awareness
• Ensure the acceptance of differences (reduce bullying).

Cleveland School Remembers was founded by a group of teachers who survived the Cleveland Elementary School shooting.

Dear Fellow Stocktonian,

     In the past year we have seen Stockton make strides toward addressing the violence that has scarred our city. The successes we’ve seen reflect the hard work of the community coming together to effect change.
     There are still many challenges to the peace and safety in our town, however, and gun violence has unmistakably been the toughest to deal with. The ubiquitous nature of this problem affects us all.
     Among those most affected by gun violence are the young people in our community. Many have experienced its trauma and heartbreak firsthand. The impact of this kind of violence can be pervasive and long-lasting.
     With that in mind, *Cleveland School Remembers is planning to provide a means for children in grades K-12 to use visual art to express their thoughts about gun violence and its impact on them, their families, and our city. Among the possibilities to be considered are semester-long art projects within the school setting or in community centers using a variety of mediums.
     The most effective way to see a project like this succeed is to draw on the same strength of community that has fostered the positive changes in Stockton’s statistics of violence.   Bringing together the voices of the art community, law enforcement, and neighborhood stakeholders will strengthen this effort.
     We invite you to join us as we begin to plan this exciting project. We will share ideas, identify a time frame, and begin to refine the details.
